Aside from Joni, lots of people feel that Dylan's "inauthentic"...that he isn't sincere in his songs, or uses a fake voice, or whatnot. I think that debate started pretty early on, in '64 when he stopped doing 'topical' songs, and got even louder in '69 when he got into light-country with a new voice, and got quite hysterical by '79 when he was 'born again'.
I think a lot of people want to feel a 'connection' to the artist behind the songs, and Dylan can be kind of off-putting or opaque in that sense - he often uses a 'persona' in his songs, and keeps the real Bob covered up, though a lot of it does of course come out from time to time.

Pretty weird, I GUESS you could look a Dylan that way, but you could say that about plenty off artists, and still miss the point . Often you could say that about the people Dylan "plagiarized " , you listen to enough early music, and you can see where Woody Guthrie got stuff from, but to dismiss him as a plagiarist would be silly . Joni's a great artist, but great artists are not always great judges of other artists . Dylan is not as unique as we used to believe, but to see him as part of the continuum of American pop/roots music , doesn't make his best music analyses great . I fact , I think it makes him MORE interesting . I suspect the the future, Highway 61, and Blonde on Blonde will still be listened to, while her albums will be listen to by those wanting to investigate " singer/songwriters influenced by Dylan "...

Zimmy and Joni are like 'night and day?' The Zimmster dodges a bullet there I'd say.

Reading further into this is fascinating,

Morgellons (also called Morgellons disease or Morgellons syndrome), is a name given in 2002 by Mary Leitao[1] to a proposed condition referred to by the Centers for Disease Control as unexplained dermopathy and characterized by a range of cutaneous (skin) symptoms including crawling, biting, and stinging sensations; finding fibers on or under the skin; and persistent skin lesions (e.g., rashes or sores). Current scientific consensus holds that Morgellons is not a new disorder and is instead a new and misleading name for a well known condition. Most doctors,[2] including dermatologists[3] and psychiatrists,[4] regard Morgellons as a manifestation of known medical conditions, including delusional parasitosis,[5][6][7] although the Mayo Clinic says that some health professionals believe that Morgellons disease is a specific condition likely to be confirmed by future research

delusional parasitosis?

I'm no doctor and haven't read any clinical analysis, So I wonder if the skin lesions are the result of the paitents attempt to remove these "bugs under the skin.

This condition has obviously affected her psyche, so I"m giving her a pass on this,

I've had bad acid , brown as dirty rain water and the stycnine poisoning I had resembles this

Coyote been into the loco weed ?

Holy cow, does she have Morgellon's? She is way out there, and not coming back. No hope remains. I didn't know she was a polio survivor, either. Maybe she has some kind of post-polio complications, I wonder if anyone's investigated that in relation to Morgellon's.

Neil Young is a polio survivor, and in his fascinating auto biography "Shakey" he related that to this day when he closes his eyes he doesn't know his left from his right.

Interesting, I didn't know that either. Clearly most polio survivors don't believe there are fibers coming out of their skin. Something is clearly wrong with Joni Mitchell's head.

I think it's more like, her psyche effected this condition.

You'd think Joni would be more upset that most people think "Wooden Ships" was written by CSNY, since their version is the one that got the most air-play. Odd, too, because she writes "By the time we got to Woodstock, we were half a million strong", and of course, she wasn't even there.

But i love Joni (her music, that is). Railing about Bob being "inauthentic" doesn't make a lot of sense, however.

yes, he changed his name (there are more than a few folks in R&R who did that), and w/out Woody Guthrie he may never have gotten started, but for crying out loud, here's a partial list of other great bands/artists who owe at least half their success to at least some level of plagiarism:

The Rolling Stones
Led Zeppelin
The Beatles
Elvis Presley
Janis Joplin
Nora Jones
Beck
Van Morrison
The Doors

and if Joni herself doesn't acknowledge her own debt to Billie Holliday, somebody should do it for her.

You raise a valid point, I need to re-read "Long Time Gone" again, But I always thought Wooden Ships was the result of Stephen Stills, Joni, David C. and many others writing collaboratively aboard David"s schooner "Mayan". Again though I haven't read it since 91-2(?).
The portion that lets all the marbles to the floor for me, is how in one breath she explains her name change then in the same breath critizizes Zim for his/ Holy Hypocrite Batman...

No doubt GC meant to type “Woodstock”, written by Joni.
Wooden Ships was written by Crosby, Stills, and Kantner.

I love that Joni - particularly Hejira and Mingus - but she has always been a resentful curmudgeon. She's the Nancy Kerrigan of folk-jazz-rock: you want to love her, then she opens her mouth.
